Server hardware failure

And of course it would start crashing again while I'm away.

Server hardware failure

Over two months ago my server started to crash randomly. After several attempts to locate and mitigate the issue, I sent an RMS on MB, PSU and NVMe. After receiving new parts, I updated the BIOS and now it seems to work again for over a week.
I actually though of quitting sometimes at the end, but now when it works, it's all worth it.

myMail to K-9

I just started using K-9 as my main android mail client. While it may not support AMOLED black or OAuth2, it's still easier and safer to use than the previous myMail. My only concern would be to not have a centralized server to reduce push notifications, but that is also a huge benefit when you want to avoid one big company controlling not just your data, but also your credentials. I need to email them if I want to remove an account.
I'll update when I'm pleased enough to remove it.

that funny feeling

Let's watch a news clip about current events, right after I accept some tracking cookies and watch a short ad about a criminal simulator mobile game.

Me, a unixy old person: "... and before end to end encryption was standardized, that meant that something called replay attacks were possible. To mitigate this, kerberos authentication was invented, which..."

A young unixy person: "can you pet it though."

"what"

"Kerberos was named for the three headed dog that guards the gates of hell, right?"

"... yes?"

"Can I pet the dog, is my question."

"..."

"..."

"Ok, no, but file that bug immediately."

@embr No, it's like Common Tongue in Lord of the Rings! Don't you remember the scene with Gandalf and Frodo in Bilbo's house?

Frodo: "It's some form of lisp. I can't read it."

Frodo showed Gandalf the ring, on which the following characters glowed evilly:

(defn date? [d] (instance? java.util.Date d))

Gandalf inspected the inscription, and replied "The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here."

Sinclair Group's cookie policy popup triggers a long fake progress delay if you deny their tracking cookies. It doesn't actually set the cookie setting until after the delay. This is a UX dark pattern to trick people into cancelling and being tracked.

Android, deprecation.

Companies takes great length to deprecate their creations in order for the customer to come back for newer ones. It's really sad that we refuse to build things that last, but products that are thrown in the bin as soon as a new alternative appear on the market.

Android, deprecation.

My OnePlus 5 was bought back in late autumn 2017. A couple of weeks back I tried to update one of their internal apps, and it told me that my device was too old and refused to update the app. A week later an another app responded in the same fashion, and then one more just a couple of days ago.
I never had this issue with my Samsung Note 2 that I owned exactly 5 years before the eMMC kicked the bucket.

Programming experience.

I just recently tried to learn both Go and Rust. In the little time I spent in both languages, only Go took me just a couple of hours, while Rust have taken a couple of days and still I haven't finished the basics needed to make a complete program.

Will need some more time to adjust me to either of them, but with the little exposure I currently have had, I understand why they both are popular.

Accidental mistypes.

Accidentally typed `linux mount zipped dick image` when I actually meant `linux mount zipped disk image`. The combination of words could have made it worse.

Luckily search engines are pretty helpful with guessing what you actually wanted to search for.
