Hadn't caught wind of this, but it's disturbing. If Linux gaming becomes dominated by running Windows games on Linux, then we'll have taken a step backward that'd put us right where we were 10+ yrs ago

"If you have released a Linux version of your game on Steam and are directly approached by Valve about using Proton instead, please get in touch (DMs open). They've already done this a few times, but I would like to see how aggressive they're planning to be going forward"

This is such a good video essay (on neoliberalism). youtube.com/watch?v=I8iRXYOMqi

There's a few editing quirks in there but he's ironed out a lot of that in later videos.

TikTok, ironically, a platform known for derivative content, has made video attribution commonplace

peertube.social is shutting down. I just downloaded all the videos I've uploaded.

Any advice for alternative to peertube.social ? It could be around open source like for example fosstodon or a more generic instance.

If we'd been looking for a solution that "works out of the box", to distribute zines, videos and rad Podcasts over wifi in an off grid environment, what would you use? (It should be possible to run with help of a 5V powerbank)

I just discovered something suuuper cool! If you have a domain on gandi.net it comes with a #cardDAV server already set up for free linked to your domain! Why is that cool? Well if you dont want google or apple to know who is in your address book on your phone you can set up an alternative host for it. I just got it set up on this Mac I am using for some work stuff after finding this page docs.gandi.net/en/gandimail/so

the idea that the 'real working class' doesn't care about reading is just the idea that working class people are stupid given a revolutionary paintjob. always, everywhere education is an equalising influence: that's why everywhere the bourgeois work so hard to make it inaccessible. if you find yourself agreeing with republicans about 'out of touch liberal academics' or education being 'useless' (what's 'useful' — skills that make money for capitalists?) that should maybe be a reality check

@jwildeboer basically, MIcrosoft GitHub #Copilot replaces the tedious, boring, frustrating work of writing new code, with the fascinating, thrilling, energizing work of debugging someone else's code.

What's not to love?

Hey #fediverse, since both masthead.social and 4estate.media seem to have been abandoned by their admins/mods, are there any active journalism-friendly instances that would be a good home for @tecc ?

Thanks!

Same goes for Google-Facebook's rivalry. For two companies that are supposed to be as different as night and day, there are a fuckton of personnel who have moved from one to the other - all the way up to Sheryl Sandberg, the one-time Google VP who's now Facebook's COO.

In his dissent to Citizens United, Justice Stevens wrote that corporate free speech was bullshit because "corporations have no consciences, no beliefs, no feelings, no thoughts, no desires."

Apple and Google are effectively a combine - for years, Google's Eric Schmidt sat on Apple's board. Apple's biggest single customer is Google. And Apple and Google had no problem illegally colluding to suppress wages with "no poach" agreements.

You won't fix Surveillance Capitalism by buying Apple products.

onezero.medium.com/how-to-dest

For all the noise that tech companies make about their rivalries - Google vs Facebook, Apple vs Google - at bottom, they differences are as meaningless as the flavors of "marshmellows" in a box of Lucky Charms.

@pettter in engineering you work on the principle of minimum material / manufacture cost to meet a specified load / cycle period + some factor of safety. Capitalists often wax lyrical about efficiencies in their system, equating their value extraction to this sort of balancing work. This conflation has been soaked up by society, and is likely the only reason people put up with our modern form of free for all Capitalism.

EU withheld a study that shows piracy doesn't hurt sales

engadget.com/2017-09-22-eu-sup

In 2013, the European Commission ordered a €360,000 ($430,000) study on how piracy affects sales of music, books, movies and games in the EU. However, it never ended up showing it to the public except for one cherry-picked section. That's possibly because the study concluded that there was no evidence that piracy affects copyrighted sales, and in the case of video games, might actually help them.
